Security Service Edge (SSE) is a security architecture defined by Gartner that focuses on delivering cloud-based security services. Gartner describes SSE as a solution that provides secure access to web, cloud services, and private applications, regardless of the user’s location, device, or where the application is hosted. SSE protects users from harmful and inappropriate content on the internet, while offering enhanced security and visibility for the SaaS and private applications accessed by end users.

SSE monitors and controls the access of end users and endpoint devices to both private and SaaS-based applications, as well as websites (with general internet traffic being less prioritized), through the cloud. This solution includes a range of security functions, such as identity and context-based adaptive access, malware protection, data security, and threat prevention, along with analytics and visibility capabilities. SSE addresses the needs of hybrid workers more effectively than traditional on-premise solutions. By integrating capabilities across different types of traffic and destinations, it provides a smoother experience for both users and administrators, while consistently maintaining the security posture.
