Security Service Edge (SSE) is a security architecture defined by Gartner that focuses on delivering cloud-based security services. Gartner defines SSE as a solution that provides secure access to the web, cloud services, and proprietary applications regardless of the user’s location, device, or where the application is hosted. SSE protects users from harmful and inappropriate content on the internet while offering enhanced security and visibility for SaaS and proprietary applications accessed by end-users.
SSE monitors and controls cloud-based access by end-users and edge devices to both private and SaaS-based applications and websites (with less priority given to general internet traffic). This solution includes a range of security functions such as identity and context-based adaptive access, malware protection, data security, and threat prevention, as well as analytics and visibility capabilities. SSE addresses the needs of hybrid employees more effectively than traditional on-premises solutions. By integrating capabilities across different traffic types and destinations, it provides a smoother experience for both users and administrators while maintaining a consistent security posture.
